Mobile Device Management (MDM) features and functionality vary depending on whether you are managing iOS or Android devices and whether the devices are company owned or employee owned. The Guides and Resources to the right are also available in the How To Pages section of the portal.
The iOS default MDM mode is for non-company owned devices. This mode allows you to install apps, app configurations and apply some restrictions. The company owned mode is called Supervised mode which enables you do all of the default mode features plus much, much more. Supervised mode allows you to install apps without an Apple Id on the device. You can also remove default apps, add wallpapers, apply custom home screen layouts, many more restrictions, clear an existing passcode and even initiate a factory reset over the air. Supervised mode is highly recommended for company owned devices. Supervised mode does require that the device be new or factory reset. You cannot put a device into Supervised mode later without factory resetting it. In addition, unless the device is in Apple Business (in which case it is likely already Supervised), you would need physical possession of the device to Supervise it. Thus, it is important to decide and act on Supervision from the beginning.
iOS device can be enrolled in the default mode by simply clicking a link in an email. When you create a freee trial, you will receive an email from EzMDM with such an Enroll link.
Enrollment of a device in Supervised mode is done via Apple Configurator or by our integration with Apple Business. Apple Business is Apple's program that works with an MDM solution provider. You can learn more about Apple Business here. Prior to Apple Business, Apple had two programs -- the Device Enrollment Program (DEP) and the Volume Purchase Program (VPP). In 2018, Apple combined the two sites/programs and re-branded it as Apple Business. You will still see the old program names and acronyms in our platform and Apple's software such as Apple Configurator 2. Just know that if you see DEP or VPP that it is simply Apple Business. Note, Apple has another program for schools called Apple Education. This program works just like Apple Business except it is for schools.
The MDM features of iOS are implemented within iOS. When a device enrolls, it is given an identity that enables the sending of push notifications to that device. When the device receives such a push notification it will connect back to the MDM system to "check-in". Apple has defined a series of commands that form its MDM protocol. During the check-in, these commands are sent to the device. The fact that there is a specific set of commands results in a limitation of the MDM feature set. Most MDM providers will have implemented most of the commands. EzMDM implements ALL of the commands. Accordingly, the feature sets of various MDM providers are fairly similar.
What is not the same is the ease of use of the portal and the automation of tasks. For example, other MDM providers will require you to create and manage push certificates. EzMDM does that for you. In addition to installings apps for you, EzMDM makes it easy to see which devices have the latest version of the apps. EzMDM is tightly integrated with Apple Business so that your apps and devices automatically appear in EzMDM.
Customer Service is a big deal! When you are trying to get something done and need help, you need it soon.
With EzMDM you can expect a quick response -- always same day, but usually within a few minutes.
At EzMDM every account is actually assigned to a real, live person! That person will reach out to you and give you direct contact info -- like a phone number you can call or text if you need something. BTW - this is not a salesperson. We do not have salespeople. We only have one price so there is no upsell. Furthermore, we do not sell -- we serve. If our solution makes sense for you, great! If not, we hope you find what works best for you.
Seriously, we spend a lot of money marketing to get your attention. Not paying attention to you afterwards makes no sense to us!
Android has three modes of MDM called Work Profile, Managed Device and Dedicated Device. Work Profile is for non-company owned devices and is fairly limited. Work Profile creates a company area on the device and apps can then be installed into this company area. As an administrator, you have the ability to remove the Work Profile over the air. Managed Device is the most common mode for company owned devices. Managed Device allows you to install apps, configure apps, remove default apps, limit apps to wifi use only, add wallpapers, add restrictions and even factory reset the device over the air. Dedicated Device is an extension of Managed Device where EzMDM becomes the home screen and only a limited set of apps are allowed. Dedicated Device also disables notifications. Dedicated Device is the new name for COSU (Corporate Owned Single Use) or Kiosk mode.
Enrolling devices into Work Profile is done by installing the EzMDM app from Play and then logging in to the app.
Enrolling devices as a Managed Device or Dedicated Device can be done various ways based on the version of Android. The links under Guides and Resources (top, right of this page) provide guides for each way.
The MDM features of Android are provided by the Android app implementation. There are only a few features required by the Android Partner Program. Thus, the feature sets can vary widely from one solution provider to another. We believe that our solution offers every important feature offered by our competition. We also have special features such as geofencing, mobile data usage alerting, wifi-only app usage and much more.
